Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is a research and innovation program initiated by the European Union that is expected to run until 2027. It is a continuation of Horizon 2020 and has a budget of over 95 billion euros. The program has a rolling "calls for proposals" approach, and PNO Chemistry’s consultants can assist in finding suitable project partners through their vast network and also in applying for (European) grants for your innovation plans. Their success rate in EU applications is twice the usual market percentage.

Themes

The Horizon Europe research and innovation program has the following objectives:

  • Enhancing science and technology in the European Union by increasing investments in highly skilled individuals and advanced research.
  • Promoting the industrial competitiveness and innovation performance of the European Union.
  • Achieving the strategic priorities of the European Union, such as the Paris Climate Agreement, and tackling global challenges that impact our daily lives.

Objectives

Horizon Europe comprises of three main themes, known as “pillars,” which are:

  1. Excellent Science

This pillar supports pioneering research initiatives defined and directed by researchers themselves via the European Research Council (ERC). Additionally, it provides funding for fellowships, exchanges, and research infrastructures through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

  1. Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness

This pillar aims to support research related to societal challenges and has been categorized by the European Commission into six clusters:

  1. Health
  2. Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society
  3. Civil Security for Society
  4. Digital, Industry and Space
  5. Climate, Energy and Mobility
  6. Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment.
  7. Innovative Europe.

The goal of this pillar is to make Europe a frontrunner in market-creating innovation. This is achieved by strengthening the overall European innovation landscape through initiatives such as the EIC Accelerator programme and the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT), which promotes the integration of business, research, higher education, and entrepreneurship.

Details

Organizations of all types, ranging from start-ups, SMEs, universities, and research organizations to large companies, from EU Member States and Associated Countries, are eligible to apply for the Horizon Europe programme. The EU has set high standards, and only the most innovative projects receive funding. Moreover, many of the calls for proposals require the participation of at least three organizations from three different countries.
